Volunteering

Two young girls with smiling faces are standing in a classroom setting, surrounded by bookshelves and other classroom materials in the background.

Welcome! We’re glad you’re here.

Family and community volunteers make our schools feel more connected, cared for, and joyful. Whether you can give an hour for a field trip, a few mornings reading with students, or a season supporting activities — your time matters. Our students and staff notice.

We want every volunteer to feel welcomed, respected, and included. Our schools are at their best when families and community members of all backgrounds and identities are part of the team, building relationships and strengthening trust across our district.

Student safety is our top priority, which is why volunteering requires a brief application and background check before you begin. The steps are below — plan for about two weeks to process.

Ways to get involved

How to get started

Thank you for partnering with us. You belong here and we’re grateful for you.

Safety and Security

To ensure a safe environment, all volunteers are required to complete an online application and volunteer background check. Volunteers must be 18 years or older and have a valid social security number.

Volunteer needs vary from school to school. Volunteers are most often needed for special events in and out of the classroom. We ask that you refrain from arriving at the school unannounced and expecting to be placed. Volunteers must have a specific volunteer assignment. To inquire about the availability of volunteer positions, please contact the school for which you are interested.

Volunteers work under the direction of school principals, teachers, and staff members to serve the interests of the schools. By agreeing to volunteer, we can achieve the following goals:

  • Relieve teachers of many non-teaching duties and tasks.
  • Assist teachers in providing more individual help and instruction to students.
  • Strengthen relationships and understanding between schools and families.

How to apply

Volunteers must be 18 or older with a valid Social Security number. Apply at least two weeks before your first volunteer date.

1

Connect with your school

Reach out to the school to learn what volunteer roles are currently available. Assignments vary by building and time of year — volunteers are placed into specific roles.

2

Submit your application

Complete the online volunteer application through Raptor Technologies. This authorizes Bend-La Pine Schools to run a criminal history background check. Apply at least two weeks before your first planned volunteer date.

3

Wait for approval (5–7 business days)

Background checks take an average of 5–7 business days. You'll receive an email notification either way. Approval is valid for two years across all BLS schools — one application covers every school in the district.

4

Sign in at every visit

Bring a government-issued photo ID each time you volunteer. Sign in and out at the front office, pick up your volunteer badge, and wear it visibly while on campus. District Policy KCA-AP: Volunteers in Schools
