Middle School Course Access & Expectations

Information for Families of Middle School Students

Bend-La Pine Schools offers online courses through Bend-La Pine Online (BLPO) as a flexible learning option for middle school students. Online learning requires strong engagement, time management, and school approval. Courses are provided through a partnership with Stride/K12, who provides content and most teachers for BLPO.

How Enrollment Works

  • Students must request BLPO courses through their school counselor.
  • Families cannot self-register on the BLPO website.
  • Counselors review student readiness, academic plans, and course availability.
  • Core courses or courses offered at the home high school require administrator approval and are often not approved.
  • Once enrolled, families receive login information and program agreements by email.
  • **Part-time enrollment in BLPO for Middle School Students is not permitted**
    • Please note this is a change from previous years.

Supplemental Online Courses for Middle School Students

  • Full-time in-person students wishing to advance in Math or World Language will need to connect with their school counselor for enrollment.
  • Full-time in-person students may concurrently enroll in their middle school Math or World Language class as well as take a Math or World Language course through BLPO.
  • Students may not take a full year of Math or World Language in the summer. To ensure completion of the full year, please enroll for the first semester of a year long course during the second semester. The second part of the course can be completed during the summer.

Course Load

  • BLPO may be used for no more than one additional class beyond a full schedule.

Full-Time Online Enrollment with BLPO

Students enrolling full-time in BLPO:

  • Will not retain a seat at a choice school
  • Will be enrolled in their neighborhood school
  • Must notify their assigned school before transitioning and will then be connected with a BLPO enrollment coordinator
  • Returning full-time BLPO students can contact the BLPO enrollment coordinator directly

Academic Expectations for All BLPO Students

Online learning requires daily participation. Students must:

  • Log in and show progress each school day
  • Submit graded work within the first 3 days of the course
  • Maintain steady progress throughout the term
  • Complete courses within the term timeline (no extensions)

Inactivity

  • Students who do not engage in the course in the first 10 days will be dropped from the course and may not be able to reenroll during this grading period.

Progress & GPA

  • Full time students who are enrolled in 3 or more courses must maintain a 2.0 GPA to be enrolled in a future online course. 

Monitoring, Integrity, & Policies

  • Online mentors monitor attendance and progress
  • Parents have the ability to set up a Learning Coach account to monitor progress
  • Courses follow district drop timelines; late drops may result in an W or F
  • Plagiarism and unauthorized AI use are monitored; repeated violations may result in removal from BLPO

Technology Requirements

  • Reliable internet
  • Daily access to a school-appropriate device
  • Possible accessibility issues and limited support outside of the United States

How Families Can Support Success

  • Help students establish a daily learning routine
  • Review progress weekly
  • Encourage communication with online teachers
  • Contact school staff early if concerns arise
  • Set up a Learning Coach account and check progress weekly
