Inter-District Transfers
If you live outside Bend-La Pine Schools (BLS) and want your student to attend here—or you live inside BLS and want your student to attend another Oregon district—you need an inter-district transfer. Both your resident (releasing) district and the receiving district must approve the transfer.
To begin: Families requesting transfer into BLS should start with their resident school district. Your resident district can explain release steps and timelines. If you are not sure which district is “home” for your address, that district can help you confirm.
Overview
State law governs inter-district transfers. Decisions are usually made in the spring for the following school year. Priorities and deadlines differ by district, so apply as early as you can.
What to know
- Mid-year moves: If a student’s new address is in another district in the region (for example Crook, Jefferson, or Klamath County; Sisters; or Redmond), they may remain at their current BLS school through the end of this school year. To attend BLS the next school year, they need approval from both districts.
- First-time transfers: Students transferring to a different district for the first time need approval from both districts.
- How long approval lasts: A transfer into BLS stays in effect through the highest grade of that level—elementary, middle, or high school. Example: A student approved for an elementary school starting in second grade does not need to reapply each year to stay at that elementary school, but the family must submit a new request for middle school (for example, sixth grade).
- Returning home: Families may always choose to return to their home school in their resident district.
- Students in foster care and families experiencing homelessness may be exempt from some transfer rules. See our Family Resources page or contact your resident district.
