Injury and Insurance
Orthopedic Injury
For students returning to school after sustaining an orthopedic injury such as a fracture or severe sprain, please notify your school nurse for further guidance. Your student will need an Orthopedic Injury Health Care Provider Note for School Activity to address the following:
- Assistive devices such as a wheelchair, walker, cane or crutches
- Weight bearing status
- Activity limitations
- School accommodations
Concussions
A concussion is an invisible brain injury. If your student reports new or worsening symptoms after hitting their head, colliding with another person or object, or falling, they should be evaluated by a qualified healthcare provider. Typical symptoms include headache, dizziness, nausea, and changes in sleep, emotions, or behavior. Learn more about concussions at the CDC website.
If your student is diagnosed with a concussion or brain injury, it’s important to notify the school right away so a return-to-learn plan can be put in place by your school’s concussion management team.
Concussions are temporary and usually resolve in 1-4 weeks with the proper support. More severe traumatic brain injuries may require longer-term accommodations. Contact your school’s Concussion Management Team for more information.
Student athletes with a suspected concussion must be cleared by a qualified healthcare provider before they will be allowed to participate in a school-sponsored sporting event, including practice.

Student Accident & Sickness Insurance
It is important to know that Bend-La Pine Schools does not carry accident insurance for students. This means that you are responsible for the medical bills if your child gets hurt during school activities. However, as a service to you and your child, the District does provide access to a low cost, voluntary purchase student accident/health insurance program. You can learn more here:
