Safe Routes to School

Safe Routes to School (SRTS) is a movement to make walking, biking, and rolling to school safer and more accessible for our families. The program provides safe and enjoyable opportunities for students to choose active transportation, whether they’re traveling on foot, using a mobility device, biking, scootering, skateboarding, or even riding the bus. Children who walk or bike to school tend to be healthier, happier, and more ready to learn. Everyone benefits from safer streets and a more connected community.

Join us in creating a brighter, healthier future by encouraging kids, families, educators, and neighbors to walk and roll together!

The Safe Routes to School program is funded by a generous grant from the Oregon Department of Transportation (ODOT), awarded in 2024. The program is also supported by the SRTS Coalition comprised of community partners from Bend Bikes, Bend-La Pine Schools leadership, Bend Metropolitan Planning Organization, City of Bend, City of La Pine, Bend Parks & Recreation District, La Pine Parks & Recreation District, Commute Options, Deschutes County, Deschutes County Bike and Pedestrian Advisory Committee, The Environmental Center, La Pine Community Health Center, ODOT, and St. Charles Health System.

Why Safe Routes to School?

The Problem

  • Within the span of one generation, the percentage of children walking or biking to school has decreased 73%.
  • Children and adolescents should have 60 minutes (1 hour) or more of physical activity daily.
  • Roads near schools are congested, decreasing safety and air quality for children.
  • The movement away from active transportation is a self-perpetuating cycle.

The Solution

  • SRTS programs and activities help overcome obstacles to walking, biking, and skating by improving safety and making these activities fun and convenient for everyone.
  • SRTS education and encouragement programs can result in a 25% increase in walking and biking over five years.
  • When education and encouragement are combined with infrastructure improvements, such as sidewalks and safe crossings, SRTS can result in a 45% increase in walking and biking.
  • One mile of walking each way to school equals 2/3 of the daily recommended 60 minutes of physical activity.
